17 September 2024

The islands of Morbihan are a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Located off the coast of Brittany, these destinations offer a unique experience for nature and adventure lovers. With their unspoiled landscapes and rich wildlife and flora, Groix Island, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Houat, and Hoëdic are an open invitation to explore. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual walker, you’ll find trails suited to all levels and routes that reveal breathtaking views.

Recommended itineraries

To fully enjoy your hiking experience in the islands of Morbihan, accessible every day of the year with BreizhGo Océane, here are several must-see itineraries:

Île de Groix: This Breton gem, located 45 minutes from Lorient, offers several marked hiking circuits. The most motivated can take the extension of the GR34, also known as the Customs Path. This 27km loop around the island allows you to admire its steep cliffs, wild beaches, and charming villages. This coastal hike offers breathtaking views of the ocean. Three other circuits, each about ten kilometers long, allow you to discover, according to your preference, the island’s main points of interest, such as the Pen Men Lighthouse, the Hell’s Hole, or Pointe des Chats.

Belle-Île-en-Mer: Known for its natural beauty, Belle-Île offers a variety of trails. One of the most popular with hikers is the GR340, which takes you around the largest Breton island in 4 days. During the summer season, thanks to our Quiberon – Sauzon line, or all year round by taking the bus from Le Palais to the port of Sauzon, we also recommend the hike to Pointe des Poulains. You can also take the trail that connects the two main ports of the island!

Houat – Hoëdic: The two sisters of Morbihan, accessible year-round from Quiberon, are perfect for walkers in search of breathtaking panoramas. The Houat island loop is less than 15 kilometers and can be completed in 3 or 4 hours. As for Hoëdic, it is about 11 kilometers and can be done in 2 or 3 hours. Ideal for an easy and accessible hike in the islands of Morbihan.

Thematic hikes

The islands of Morbihan offer thematic hikes that allow you to explore much more than their beautiful landscapes. These trails combine nature, history, and cultural discovery for an even more immersive experience.

Geological hike on Île de Groix
Known for its unique geological richness, Île de Groix is a true treasure for mineral enthusiasts. Thematic trails guide you through significant sites such as the Grands Sables beach, the largest convex beach in Europe, and the cliffs that reveal rock layers dating back millions of years.

Historical hike on Belle-Île-en-Mer
On Belle-Île, follow a route dedicated to discovering fortifications and historical heritage. By taking the GR340, you can explore iconic sites such as the Vauban Citadel, while enjoying exceptional panoramas of the sea and inland areas.

Fauna and flora hike on Houat and Hoëdic
These two small islands are ideal for a naturalist hike. You will discover typical island vegetation, where heathlands and dunes meet steep cliffs. Nature lovers can also observe a rich local fauna, particularly seabirds nesting along the wild coasts of Houat and Hoëdic, in a calm and preserved environment.
