11 June 2025

For a memorable getaway, let yourself be swept up in an unforgettable day on Belle‑Île‑en‑Mer, this wonderful island where every corner reveals a new facet of its insular brilliance.

Iconic Sites

Belle‑Île‑en‑Mer, a true treasure of Brittany, offers stunning landscapes and must-see landmarks. At Pointe des Poulains, discover the Fort de Sarah Bernhardt and the Maison du Littoral, ideal for learning about local fauna. The Citadelle Vauban watches over Le Palais harbor, echoing the island’s military history, while the Belle Fontaine charms with panoramic views and echoes of a distant past.

The Grands Sables offer relaxation on their fine sandy beach, and Locmaria Church envelops visitors in peaceful serenity. The Aiguilles de Port‑Coton, with dramatic rock formations, are among the wild coast’s most beautiful spots. The Grand Phare, one of Europe’s most powerful lighthouses, offers a breathtaking vista—and with two white flashes every 10 seconds, it remains among your most memorable night beacons. Finally, Donnant Beach is perfect for surf enthusiasts and spectacular scenery.

Explore Belle‑Île on Foot

For those who love walking, Belle‑Île is sure to delight! After a 50‑minute crossing, the port of Le Palais appears. Once disembarked, take the bus to Sauzon, the island’s second harbor in the north. Before your hike, remember to book accommodations—wild camping is strictly prohibited year‑round.

In high season, you can use the summer Quiberon–Sauzon ferry, linking the mainland to charming Sauzon in just 30 minutes—perfect for a daytrip.

From Sauzon to Pointe des Poulains

From Sauzon, follow the 5.3 km coastal path (approx. 1h30) to Pointe des Poulains via the GR 340 marked in red and yellow. Then, return along the coastal path to Le Palais—ideal for a rewarding day on the island.

From Grands Sables to Le Palais

Take bus line 3 from Le Palais to Grands Sables, enjoy this 2‑km-long beach, then hike back (approx. 2h30, 9.1 km) to Le Palais.

For the sporty

Belle‑Île is a paradise for hikers. Its 85 km coastal trail (GR 340), voted France’s favorite in 2022, circles the island—perfect for nature and hiking lovers over 4–5 days. Check our suggested itinerary for a full island circuit.
