Starting July 1: Smoke-free crossings aboard our vessels
03 July 2025
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing all passengers with a healthier and more enjoyable experience, BreizhGo Océane is introducing a new measure starting July 1, 2025: smoking will no longer be allowed on board our vessels, including on uncovered outdoor decks.
A measure to improve your travel experience
This decision fully aligns with the national initiative to protect younger generations, as set out in Decree No. 2025-582, published at the end of June 2025. This decree expands smoke-free public spaces to reduce children’s and adolescents’ exposure to secondhand smoke.
Beyond this public health goal, we’ve chosen to go further by protecting all our passengers. During busy periods, close proximity between passengers increases, and discomfort from smoke—even outdoors—is heightened. To ensure optimal comfort for everyone, smokers and non-smokers alike, this ban aims to maintain a more respectful and pleasant onboard environment.
What’s changing for your crossing
- Smoking will be prohibited on all BreizhGo Océane vessels and all routes (Groix, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Houat, Hoëdic), including outdoor decks.
- Ashtrays on the decks will be gradually removed.
- Information and awareness messages will be displayed in ferry terminals and on board.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the smoking ban also apply to electronic cigarettes?
Decree No. 2025-582 of June 27, 2025 only prohibits traditional cigarettes in certain public spaces. Vaping will still be permitted on board, but only on uncovered outdoor decks.
However, we encourage passengers to limit their use of e-cigarettes during the crossing and to stay as far away as possible from other travelers, especially children.
As a reminder, vaping is strictly prohibited in all indoor or covered areas of the ship.
Can I smoke before boarding?
Decree No. 2025-582 bans smoking in “areas designated for waiting passengers.” This includes boarding lines, even when located outdoors.
Additionally, we remind you that smoking or vaping inside ferry terminals is strictly prohibited.
Why is smoking now banned on BreizhGo Océane vessels?
In 2024, BreizhGo Océane transported over 350,000 young passengers aged 0 to 25. This number speaks volumes: we are fully committed to enforcing this new national decree and protecting younger generations from exposure to tobacco smoke and consumption.
Furthermore, cigarette butts thrown into the sea are a real environmental threat. For example, a single cigarette butt can pollute up to 500 liters of water. By banning tobacco use on board, we are reinforcing our commitment to environmental protection, in line with our CSR policy.
This measure reflects our desire to improve onboard comfort for all. By applying these new rules together, we’ll help make every crossing a more pleasant and respectful experience for all passengers.
