Best hikes in Belle-Île for a nature-filled getaway

22 July 2025

Looking for a breath of fresh air? The hikes in Belle-Île offer a stunning mix of Breton landscapes — wild cliffs, secret beaches and charming little harbours like Sauzon. Whether you’re into easy strolls or challenging treks, the island promises a 100% nature escape.

The French’s favourite GR®: the Tour of Belle-Île

Voted France’s favourite long-distance trail in 2022, the GR® de Pays – Tour de Belle-Île is an 85 km marked trail (red and yellow) that loops around the entire island. In five stages (or four for experienced hikers), discover a rich variety of landscapes: from the Pointe des Poulains to the Port Coton Needles, from the port of Sauzon to Le Palais, from the sandy beaches of Locmaria to the wild coastline near Bangor… Hiking this coastal trail is more than just walking — it’s an encounter with raw, preserved nature.

With nearly 2,800 metres of elevation gain, the route sometimes feels like mountain hiking. But there’s no rush — every step is worth savouring. Take time to observe the unique flora, seabirds and ever-changing views.

Enjoy every moment as you go, discovering remarkable flora and fauna, historic monuments and breathtaking natural sites. Modestly speaking, these are some of the most beautiful landscapes in Southern Brittany 😊

Hike across Belle-Île or from a fixed base

You have two ways to hike:

  • Itinerant hiking, for fans of long treks with a new stop each night. Careful planning is needed — especially for accommodation.

  • Star-shaped hiking, ideal if you prefer returning to the same accommodation every evening. Many providers offer “hiking packages” with everything included.

⚠️ Wild camping is strictly forbidden across the island — be sure to book your accommodation before setting off.

Loop trails around Sauzon and elsewhere

Besides the GR®, Belle-Île has 17 hiking loops to enjoy at your own pace. They’re great for mixing walking and sightseeing: gardens, artisans’ workshops, local producers and charming chapels. A perfect way to soak in Belle-Île’s authentic character.

These walks are also detailed in the official hiking guide available for sale at the Belle-Île Tourist Office.

Before you hike in Belle-Île: good to know

  • Bring water and food: supply points are located in the 4 main towns.

  • No bins along the trails: carry a small pouch for your waste.

  • No pointed trekking poles: use rubber tips.

  • Stay on the marked trails to protect the island’s fragile flora.

  • The island is walkable year-round, but off-season is ideal for a quieter experience.
