Explore Belle-Île on foot along the GR 340
02 March 2022
Belle-Île is a true paradise for hikers. Its coastal trails were even voted France’s favourite GR in 2022.
Head to Belle-Île for a few days
Take a ferry to Belle-Île-en-Mer and explore Brittany’s largest island on foot, off the coast of the Gulf of Morbihan. With 85 km of coastal trail, the GR 340 loops around the island and offers nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts breathtaking views over 4 to 5 days. That’s the minimum time needed to fully discover the island’s many treasures. To enjoy the stunning seascapes and take in the surrounding nature, the Belle-Île Tourist Office recommends planning daily stages of 20 to 30 km. Beginners can plan to walk around the island over a full week, allowing time for visits or breaks as part of their Belle-Île holiday.
Discover an island with character
Your hike will treat you to a constantly changing landscape of colors depending on the time of day, weather, and tides. Belle-Île lives up to its name all year round, especially in the off-season. If you’re drawn to its wild side, consider discovering Belle-Île in winter — alone, as a couple, or in a group. It’s a chance to experience another atmosphere: more preserved, more authentic, more unpredictable… and maybe even more spectacular!
Be prepared: Belle-Île-en-Mer is also the most hilly of Brittany’s islands. Make sure you’re well-equipped and ready. And don’t hesitate to contact the Belle-Île-en-Mer Tourist Office for ready-to-go hiking holiday ideas.
